Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Peter Graves and now Leslie Nielsen ... who?
At least audiences had heard of the first three, but this guy -- it was true, when it came time to select an actor to play Dr. Rumack, my brother Jerry, Jim Abrahams and I remembered: "This one guy, he's been in hundreds of television shows, and I think he played the captain of the Poseidon. What's his name ...?"
Our research revealed that the actor's name was Leslie Nielsen. The long list of straight dramatic acting roles demonstrated to us that he would be perfect. When we watched those movies, we laughed.
Script, he "got" its unconventional nature and offbeat style.
Became famous for his deadpan performances in spoofs, is said to have become an actor in part in rebellion against his Danish-born father, a strict disciplinarian and Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer posted in Canada’s far north.
“Leslie Nielsen was key to ‘Airplane!’ and perfect in the role. I look at his performance and it was very flawless,” Jerry Zucker said Monday, adding there could be no better delivery of Nielsen’s “Shirley” line.
Leslie Nielsen would go on to enjoy even greater success as Detective Frank Drebin in “The Naked Gun” film series based on a television show he had once starred in called “Police Squad.”
Married four times and a father of two girls, Nielsen would eventually become a naturalized American citizen, and buy a home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he enjoyed playing golf in between acting gigs.
Leslie Nielsen continued acting until his death.
Leslie Nielsen signed two different cards -- a standard version of his Spectrum of Stars card and a rarer version limited to 50 copies. In addition to those two cards, Nielsen also appears on four printing plate cards, the sheets of metal used to print the cards which were cut down to card size and randomly placed into packs.
