Samsung had enough shipments of plasma TVs in the third quarter to offset its decline in LCDs. Vizio designs and markets low-cost digital TVs, manufacturing the products elsewhere. The gain in market share come as Vizio prepares to boost its marketing. The game will be known as the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio, while the 2014 contest will be called the 2014 Vizio BCS National Championship Game, according to ESPN.
Vizio will have logo rights for product packaging and all Rose Bowl-related events.
Singer and actress Beyonce Knowles-Carter was featured in Vizio’s Super Bowl commercial.
During the third quarter, Vizio shipped more than 1.6 million televisions, capturing 19.9 percent of the U.S. LCD market. The company also gained compared with its second-quarter market share of 18.7 percent.
It captured 17.7 percent market share during the quarter, up slightly from the 16.4 percent share it had during the same period last year. Sony, LG, and Sanyo rounded out the top five with 9.9 percent, 9.2 percent, and 6.9 percent market share, respectively.
During the period, Samsung had 19.3 percent market share of all television shipments to the U.S. Last year, the company had just 13.6 percent market share.
While Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and the rest are all focused on 3D sets that use active shutter technology, Vizio is going to be launching a 65 inch TV that utilizes the passive technology found in theaters.
The overall category consists of both LCD and plasma sets. Samsung shipped 1.82 million flat-panel sets in the third quarter, up 0.2% from 1.81 million in the second quarter, earning Samsung a 19.3% share of overall shipments, ISuppli said.
